About the race

Swimming along the southern coast of Panglao, the white sand and coral seabed drops off abruptly at a depth of six meters, opening into a submarine cliff that plunges into the blue. This is the setting for Oceanman Bohol Philippines, an open water swimming race in the sea off Panglao Island, in the Bohol province of the Philippines. The starting line sits on the shore of Alona Beach, a 1,500-meter-long crescent of white sand shaded by coconut palms and lapped by calm, transparent water. Swimming here means gliding over a warm, crystal-clear sea, surrounded by warm tropical air that accompanies your strokes from the early hours of the morning.

The event, organized by DalumFitness, is held in May and offers a range of courses suitable for every level of endurance. Younger athletes or beginners can try their hand at the 500-meter OceanKids, while those looking for a fast race will find the 2-kilometer Sprint formula. The long-distance challenges heat up with the 5-kilometer Half Oceanman and reach their peak in the 10-kilometer Oceanman marathon, where navigating between the buoys requires focus and consistency along the edge of the coral reef.

The submarine cliffs and coral gardens of southern Panglao

In the underwater environment of Alona Beach, colonies of black coral thrive, and compact schools of sardines, lobsters, and sea turtles pass by. Strong underwater currents flow along this oceanic corridor, which can sometimes stir up particles and momentarily reduce visibility in the water. For the swimmer, the current is a travel companion to be interpreted carefully at every turn, enjoying the feeling of floating suspended above a living abyss.

Panglao Island Protected Seascape: the richest waters in the Pacific

Research by the Panglao Marine Biodiversity Project has identified approximately 250 new species of crustaceans and 2,500 previously unknown species of mollusks on the seabed of Panglao Island. This incredible heritage means that the marine biodiversity of Panglao Island exceeds that found in the entire Mediterranean Sea and all the coasts of Japan combined. To preserve such a submerged treasure, the area was established as a national park in July 2018 under the name Panglao Island Protected Seascape. The local ecosystem is subject to strict daily access limits to protect the integrity of the reef and the health of the fauna. A short distance from the coast lie the marine protected reserves of Balicasag and Pamilacan islands, true sanctuaries dedicated to responsible underwater exploration.

Maribojoc limestone and the underground pool of Hinagdanan Cave

Among these rock cathedrals, Hinagdanan Cave is a limestone cave that extends for about one hundred meters underground. The cavity was discovered by chance by the landowner, who heard a splash in the water after throwing a stone into a crack in the ground. Inside the cave, a deep lagoon opens up, fed by underground rainwater runoff, surrounded by a dense forest of stalactites and stalagmites. Small natural openings in the stone vault offer shelter to various colonies of birds that nest away from the light. This underground lake is not only a fascinating destination to explore once you take off your goggles, but it also represents an essential water reserve for the life of the entire island.

The 1851 watchtower and ancient trade shores of Panglao

Archaeological excavations conducted in the municipality of Panglao have unearthed trade artifacts and Chinese porcelain dating back to the Tang, Song, and Ming dynasties. The Panglao watchtower remains, built in 1851. The structure has an octagonal plan developed over five floors.

Along the coast: from Alona Beach to Dumaluan and Sibukaw

Alona Beach, framed at both ends by rocky cliffs, is the nerve center of coastal life and the best-equipped beach in the district. Along its shoreline, local fishermen collect sea urchins to offer them to bathers as a fresh snack, opening them on the spot between the white sand and the calm sea. Those looking for more relaxed corners to rest their arms after the race can head towards Dumaluan Beach, characterized by an even wider stretch of soft sand and less crowded cerulean waters. A little further on, Libaong Beach welcomes travelers with its powdery sand, palm trees, and rustic huts on the shore, while at Bagobo Beach, a pebble ridge gives way to sand as fine as chalk.

The more intimate soul of the island can finally be felt at Doljo Beach, sheltered on the northern side with clear shallows where you can admire the sunset. Bikini Beach is a simple coastline devoid of large structures where locals gather to swim and fish at the end of the day, along with the public beach of Sibukaw. Under the shade of the coconut trees in Sibukaw, families grill fish outdoors and fishermen mend their nets, offering an authentic portrait of a coast that lives in perfect symbiosis with its sea.
