About the race
Between the Tuscan archipelago and the Hyères islands of France, the strait separating the medieval cliffside town of Portovenere from Palmaria Island forms the sole naturally sheltered anchorage along hundreds of kilometers of open sea. The Palmaria Island Swim is an open water swimming race held in the marine waters of Portovenere, right along the scenic coast of Liguria in northwestern Italy. Swimmers gather on this dramatic maritime edge to take on the sea channels that have sheltered Mediterranean mariners for millennia. The competition centers on a single 3.5-kilometer sea course contested in late May. Swimmers plunge into the open water. While past editions have enjoyed warm weather with ambient air climbing above thirty degrees, swimmers often meet the brisk northwest Maestralino breeze that rises in the late morning to stir the surface and cool the passage.
Portovenere and the sheltered waters of the gulf
The Spezzino archipelago sits just west of the Gulf of La Spezia, a sprawling natural basin measuring approximately 4.5 kilometers in length and up to 3.5 kilometers across. In Roman antiquity, the settlement was named Veneris Portus after a seaside temple dedicated to Venus, the goddess who was mythologized to have risen directly from the sea foam below the promontory. The open sea stretching beyond this protected sanctuary has claimed storied voyagers throughout history. In the spring of 1516, a violent offshore tempest caused the wreck of a Portuguese ship transporting a live rhinoceros intended as an exotic gift for Pope Leo X. Centuries later, in 1822, the British poet Percy Bysshe Shelley tragically drowned in the gulf when his vessel went down during a sudden storm. Inside the strait and beneath the island's protective shoulder, however, the race waters remain shielded from the worst moods of the open Ligurian Sea.
Palmaria Island: sea cliffs, marble quarries, and caves
On its western flank, Palmaria Island rises steeply out of the sea with towering vertical cliffs honeycombed by numerous limestone grottos. Among these coastal hollows is the remarkable Cave of Pigeons, an archaeological treasure trove containing fossilized bones of prehistoric Pleistocene beasts alongside human burial traces dating back at least five thousand years. Past the southern cove of Pozzale lies an abandoned quarry once renowned for yielding portoro, a rare and exquisite black marble streaked with veins of gold. The arid limestone margins here are home to a vibrant Mediterranean ecosystem comprising around five hundred plant species, including hardy rock samphire that thrives directly on the wave-washed sea cliffs. The craggy rocks also shelter rare fauna such as the European leaf-toed gecko, the smallest gecko species on the continent.
Further offshore along this dramatic coast, distinctive maritime landmarks emerge from the azure expanse. Southwest of Portovenere stands the Scoglio Galera, situated just off the coastal stretch known as le Rosse for the brilliant crimson hue of its iron-oxide rich rocks. Out across the waves rises the Scoglio Ferale, an imposing pyramidal sandstone monolith that rears thirty meters above the Ligurian Sea with a perimeter spanning roughly one hundred meters.
Torre Scola and the maritime fortresses of the strait
The historic silhouette of Torre Scola stands directly in the sea. In January 1800, during the War of the Second Coalition, Torre Scola became the theater of a fierce naval duel between English and French warships. Severe damage inflicted by British cannon fire ultimately led to its abandonment in the early nineteenth century, until extensive restoration works between 1976 and 1980 stabilized its perimeter ramparts. The island's ridgeline above remains studded with historic military bastions, including the Fort Count of Cavour, the Batteria Semaforo, and the ironclad tower Umberto I, which was repurposed as a military prison during World War II. During the Aragonese assault of 1494, local women led by the privateer Jacopo Bardella famously slathered the seaside rocks with slippery animal tallow, causing the invading soldiers to lose their footing as they tried to disembark.
Tino and Tinetto: monasteries and lighthouses south of the course
South of Palmaria, the Spezzino archipelago continues with the smaller islands of Tino and Tinetto, forming an unbroken chain of three islands trailing away from the Portovenere promontory. Tino is steeped in early medieval monasticism, having served as the secluded hermitage of Saint Venerius until his death in 630. An eleventh-century monastery was later erected on the island in his honor, and picturesque ruins from that medieval abbey remain visible along its northern shore. Today, Tino remains a restricted military zone crowned by the historic San Venerio Lighthouse. Ordered by King Carlo Alberto in 1839 and operational since 1840, the light has guided mariners across the eastern Ligurian waters for generations, beginning with vegetable oil and coal before receiving steam-powered lenses in a taller tower in 1884 and a petroleum vapor system in 1912. Beyond Tino lies tiny Tinetto, an isolated limestone islet that harbors its own exclusive endemic reptile, the wall lizard subspecies Podarcis muralis tinettoi. Gliding through the pristine sea makes the 3.5-kilometer journey an immersion in true Mediterranean history.
