About the race

At the quiet corner of Praia Mansa, swimmers plunge into the Atlantic to follow the rocky contours of the peninsula. This setting hosts Quebra Gelo — Edição Verão, an open water sea swimming race organized by Correr E Nadar in Guaratuba, along the coast of Paraná in Brazil. The Portuguese phrase that gives the race its name refers to breaking the ice, whether dispelling awkward tension in social gatherings or recalling the maritime endeavor of ships cutting channels through frozen seas. While past editions of the Quebra Gelo swim gathered competitors in the calm waters of Balneário Caiobá in nearby Matinhos on the first Sunday of September, the summer edition establishes its base on the beaches of Guaratuba.

The competition centers around Prainha, offering both a 600-meter course and a longer 2.2-kilometer point-to-point crossing. For the 2.2-kilometer event, the field gathers at the left corner of Praia Mansa before setting out across open sea. The 2.2-kilometer journey is a continuous line tracing the shoreline parallel to the rocky coastal cliffs all the way to the tip of the island, before angling inward to finish near the pier at Prainha. Because swimmers must handle the moving swell alongside exposed cliffs, the longer route is a demanding crossing not recommended for beginners. However, novice open water swimmers can comfortably choose the shorter 600-meter dash within the calm confines of Prainha. Wetsuits are strictly prohibited in this summer race, leaving competitors to read the surface chop without synthetic buoyancy. In past editions, swimmers recorded remarkably fast times when the tidal current ran directly in their favor along the coast.

Baía de Guaratuba: estuarine currents meeting the Atlantic

Guaratuba lies across a sandy peninsula flanked by two different marine environments, looking out across the sheltered bay to the northwest and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. Along the ocean side, a sweeping beach arc curves across 2,440 meters of sand, held between Morro de Caieiras to the north and Morro do Cristo to the south. Along parts of this coastal strip, artificial containment walls have been built to stabilize the shoreline, an intervention that alters natural wave motion during storm tides. Directly behind the town spreads the Baía de Guaratuba, the second largest bay in the state of Paraná. The bay is dotted with quiet outposts such as Ilha do Capim and Ilha da Sepultura. For decades, the expanse of the bay could only be crossed aboard a ferry service running between the shores. That long-standing water transit was transformed in 2026 with the opening of a 1,244-meter road bridge that now spans the entrance of the bay.

The Carijó shores and the 1868 wreck at Praia das Pedras

Human settlements have lined these coastal channels since long before the first European navigators sailed into the inlet in the sixteenth century. The shores were originally home to the Carijó indigenous people. Evidence of early inhabitants survives in 131 identified archaeological sites across the district, primarily preserved as sambaquis. Colonial authorities ordered the formal occupation of the Guaratuba inlet in 1765, a defensive move designed to deter Spanish expansion along the southern Brazilian coast. The Caminho do Ambrósios became a vital historical track for Iberian pioneers entering the Paraná hinterland. At low tide, the receding water bares a shipwreck from 1868 resting on the rocks.

Guaratuba Environmental Protection Area: mangroves and coastal birds

The Guaratuba Environmental Protection Area protects fragile salt marshes and mangrove channels that sustain the life cycles of the entire estuarine basin. Approximately eleven kilometers from the starting beach lies Boguaçu State Park, which covers 6,052 hectares of protected land within the municipal borders of Guaratuba. Across the mangroves, tidal flats, and coastal plains of the environmental protection area, ornithologists have recorded 322 bird species. The protected wetlands shelter specialized residents such as the marsh antwren, an elusive bird species first documented in these thickets in 1995. During their seasonal journeys along the South Atlantic coastline, migratory visitors also stop here, with swallows, loons, and wandering sea tortoises feeding and sheltering in these coastal waters.

Praia de Caieiras and the Guaratuba waterfront

Beyond the race perimeter, the town of Guaratuba keeps the easygoing rhythm of an authentic maritime settlement. Along the shoreline, rustic wooden fishing skiffs bob at their moorings, working the coastal shoals throughout the changing seasons. Near the passage into the bay sits Praia de Caieiras, a quiet cove known for its traditional fishing colony and sheltered waters. For those spending time along the outer coast, the shoreline offers contrasting stretches of sand and surf. Praia Central unfolds over a wide expanse of golden sand and calm, clear waters that make it a favorite destination for relaxing swims and strolls. Farther along the oceanfront, Praia Brava and Brejatuba face the full momentum of the Atlantic, where rolling breakers crash against native coastal vegetation, attracting surfers to open ocean waves.
