About the race
The current tugs at your suit as you glide over a submerged ridge, a hidden geological spine connecting Upolu and Savai'i. Below you, the seabed is not merely sand, but a silent repository of history; in 1973, dredging for the Mulifanua ferry terminal revealed a Lapita archaeological site some 3,000 years old, where thousands of ancient pottery fragments still rest in the silt. You are swimming through the Samoa Swim Series, a multi-day event that navigates the distinct passages of the Pacific, testing your endurance across 1,000m, 2,000m, or 4,000m courses.
Volcanic waters and sacred ground
As you adjust your goggles, the skyline is dominated by the stark silhouette of the Apolima volcanic crater. Rising 165 meters above the surface, its rugged, bowl-like rim keeps watch over the strait. The water here is a transit zone for marine life, particularly around the rocky outcrop of Nu'ulopa. This tiny, uninhabited islet is a sanctuary for nesting sea turtles and flying foxes, while its forest floor holds a more somber significance: it has long served as the traditional burial ground for the high chiefs of Manono. Navigating near the shore of Manono itself, you pass the coordinates of the Faleu village landing, where in 1835, Rev. Peter Turner arrived to establish the Methodist mission, an event now marked by a stone memorial visible from the water's edge. This series is designed to be more than a race, placing swimmers in the heart of these historical currents.

Alternatively, boutique resorts along the coast provide more conventional amenities. Expect to find budget-friendly fales starting at $40–$80 per night, while comfortable, full-service resort rooms range from $150 to $300, depending on proximity to the water.
Things to do nearby
The days surrounding the swim are ideal for exploring the volcanic geography and local traditions. Beyond the race, participants often join guided kayak excursions to circle the smaller islets or hike the cliff-side trails on Apolima for a view back across the strait. Cultural experiences, including traditional kava ceremonies in village settings and visits to archaeological heritage sites, offer a deeper understanding of the maritime history that defines these islands.
