About the race

South of Lima's heavy Pacific breaks, the enclosed cove of Santa María del Mar forms an unexpected natural saltwater pool along the desert shore. The Santa María Swim & Grill is an open water swimming race held in the Pacific ocean waters of Santa María del Mar, in the province of Lima on the central Peruvian coast. While the district directly borders the open Pacific Ocean to the west, its coastal topography creates unusually tranquil conditions, making these calm waters an enduring draw for visiting swimmers. Within this coastal perimeter lies Playa Embajadores, a small, enclosed beach that functions much like a natural swimming pool. The cove remains practically free of breaking waves, allowing swimmers to focus entirely on stroke mechanics and pacing without battling heavy Pacific swell. In 2020, the local hydrography and seafloor contours were formally recognized when an official nautical chart of Santa María was unveiled in the district.

Marine mammals of the central Peruvian Pacific coast

In Miraflores, about thirteen kilometres up the coast from the local area, an unexpected southern elephant seal was recorded resting directly on Makaha beach.

Prehistoric desert fishers and nineteenth-century coastal landings

Human interaction with this sheltered shoreline extends back thousands of years. Around 4,500 years ago, prehistoric hunter-gatherer groups inhabited the area, relying on the protected littoral waters to fish and drying their ocean harvest directly in the arid desert sands. Playa Embajadores also had strategic maritime value in modern history, serving as a landing site for Chilean troops during the War of the Pacific. Physical traces of this nineteenth-century conflict remained preserved in the sand for generations, exemplified by a Chilean Bachmann-type rifle cartridge discovered on Embajadores beach in 2021. In the twentieth century, human activity along the shoreline turned back toward managed marine productivity. In 1943, a maritime concession of 25 hectares was officially granted across the beach area of Posa de Santa María to develop fish farming installations along the coast.

The seaside promenade and architecture of Santa María del Mar

The modern seaside resort took shape through the vision of its founder, Elías Fernandini Clotet. Today, the waterfront is centered around the main beach, known locally as the 'playuela', bordered by an oceanfront pedestrian promenade. Rising prominently above the shoreline stands the 'Casa del Faro', a distinctive architectural landmark constructed atop a rocky hill completely encircled by the sea. Fronting this waterfront sits Club Esmeralda, long regarded as the social hub of Santa María del Mar. In past decades the club was renowned for hosting lavish social galas, most notably a famous 1961 carnival celebration designed around the theme of the Palace of Versailles.

The Santa María Swim & Grill at Club Esmeralda

Every November, the bay turns from a quiet weekend refuge into an athletic arena for the Santa María Swim & Grill. Organized by Sports Perú Entertainment and Swim Bike Run Peru, the event takes place at Club Esmeralda, returning to the club's shoreline for its annual running. Competitors can choose between two open-water distances: a 1.9-kilometer route and a longer 3.8-kilometer challenge. Once the final strokes are completed, finishers receive their commemorative medals and gather alongside residents and visiting clubs for the event's signature post-race fellowship grill right beside the ocean.
