About the race
At Gota Beach, Swim Central hosts the Swimjunkie Challenge: Caramoan, an open water swimming race across the sea of Caramoan in the Philippines. The event was launched in 2015 with a 7-kilometer swim and has grown to feature the first 20-kilometer ultramarathon swim loop anywhere in the country. The competition offers five distinct distances across 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 15,000, and 20,000 meters. Swimmers set out on a route that navigates from island to island across expansive coral fields, connecting Gota Beach, Hunongan Cove, Lahos Island, and Matukad Island. Thanks to the unique shape of the coastline, organizers are able to set a single continuous 5-kilometer island-to-island loop without repeating any sections of the course.
Out on the water, the crossing blends endurance with unique local touches. In the 2016 race, participants were treated to a mid-swim hydration stop on Matukad Island stocked with fresh coconuts and gummy bears. In past editions, swimmers have found the final 3 kilometers to be the most demanding stretch of the route, where churning waves kick up right around the last island buoy. Once back on dry land, finishers gather together on the beach to celebrate the swim with a traditional boodle fight meal.
Maqueda Channel and the Lagonoy Gulf coastline
The Caramoan Peninsula extends directly into the open waters between the Maqueda Channel and the Lagonoy Gulf. The municipality features roughly 71 kilometers of deeply irregular coastline.
Caramoan National Park karst cliffs and lagoons
Directly along this dramatic stretch of coast lies Caramoan National Park, spanning an area of 347 hectares. The reserve occupies a hilly peninsula marked by rough, rocky terrain and deep gorges that plunge toward the shoreline. The landscape is famed for its rugged karst scenery, where vertical limestone formations tower over hidden lagoons, sea caves, and rocky cliffs. Among the scattered offshore formations, the park even shelters an islet lake and a subterranean river winding through the limestone interior. Tucked between the rocky promontories, swimmers and travelers encounter pristine stretches of white and subtle pink sand beaches. The entire park is recognized as an Important Bird Area, safeguarding the primary habitat of the rare green racket-tail parrot within its coastal forests.
Gota Beach cove and the village cabanas
The event is anchored at Gota Beach, an enclosed cove where mocha-colored sand sits flanked by dramatic limestone formations. Large, flat, smooth rocks lie scattered between the shoreline and the sea, creating a stable natural footing for swimmers stepping into the water. On the shore, a resort village provides essential lodging and facilities for day-trippers and overnight guests alike, centered around rustic wooden cabanas with brown walls and red roofs arranged in small circles. Beyond the main beach, a shaded walking trail near the marine office cuts through a lush mangrove forest to reveal a separate cove with finer, lighter-colored sand. After hours spent navigating the channels and reefs, competitors can head to the resort restaurant to share comforting plates of local Filipino cuisine, such as the regional comfort dish Laing.

Where to stay
Caramoan offers a mix of modest beach resorts and traditional guesthouses, many managed by local families who maintain the area's secluded atmosphere. For a more tailored experience, boutique lodges situated near the port provide direct access to the water. Expect to pay between $40 and $120 per night, depending on proximity to Gota Beach and the level of amenities. As the event draws closer, organizers often release additional inventory in the village to accommodate the influx of participants, so securing a space early is recommended.
Things to do nearby
Beyond the race, the peninsula is a hub for exploration. Visitors often spend their downtime island-hopping via small outrigger boats to reach hidden lagoons and sandbars that are inaccessible by foot. Kayaking and SUP are the preferred ways to inspect the caves of Guta Port up close, while the interior of the peninsula offers trekking paths through preserved forests. Local culinary traditions focus on fresh seafood, best enjoyed at informal beachside eateries, where you can sample regional dishes prepared with coconut milk and local spices.
