About the race

In 1777, the British explorer James Cook finally set foot on the island of Moorea during his third Pacific voyage, after previously anchoring nearby to observe the transit of Venus. While his arrival marked a turning point in Western documentation of the archipelago, the island—known locally as Mo'orea, or 'yellow lizard'—had long been defined by its volcanic architecture. Today, participants in The Lagoon Race navigate these same waters, a sanctuary carved from the remnants of an ancient shield volcano. The race, organized by the local club Moorea Natation, offers a unique perspective on the island's geological history, with the course set against the dramatic skyline of Mount Tohivea and the unmistakable silhouette of the Mouaputa peak.

{{h2:Peaks and legends}}

As you swim, the landscape above the surface remains as compelling as the marine life below. The jagged summit of the Mouaputa mountain is instantly recognizable by the massive, clear hole piercing its center. According to local lore, this void was not a product of erosion but a strike from a spear hurled by the demigod Pai, thrown with such force from the neighboring island of Tahiti that it punctured the very crest of the mountain. Seeing this landmark while maintaining your stroke provides a constant, towering reference point. These peaks, along with Mount Tohivea, serve as the primary remnants of the original crater rim created by the Society hotspot, a volcanic engine that shaped this entire region. The event, held annually in November, invites swimmers to engage directly with this volcanic legacy, transitioning from the calm, protected shallows of the lagoon into a space where history and geography converge.
