About the race

The Traversarea Lacului in Văliug, scheduled for July 25, 2026, serves as a test of endurance in the mountain waters of the Banat region. Swimmers can choose between distances of 200m, 400m, 2000m, and 2400m. Organized by Clubul Sportiv de Înot Resita 07, the event utilizes the controlled environment of the Văliug reservoir, an inland lake that provides a consistent, high-altitude setting for open water competition.

The dam and the landscape

As you navigate the course, your line of sight is dominated by the massive 27-meter-high concrete arch dam, completed in 1909. This industrial monument, stretching over 90 meters, was originally engineered to provide water and power to the region, and today it creates the calm basin that hosts the race. Looking beyond the water, the horizon is filled by the rugged peaks of the Banat Mountains. The environment here is profoundly defined by the Văliug reservoir, which sits as a vital link in a local water-management history that includes the nearby Breazova reservoir, the first facility of its kind in southeastern Europe to utilize a Francis turbine.

Biodiversity and heritage

The lake’s edges are influenced by the proximity of the Bârzavița Nature Reserve, a protected area that preserves the rich flora and fauna of Caraș-Severin county. Further analysis of the surrounding topography reveals the influence of the Groposu protected area, where unique geomorphological formations define the valley walls. While you swim, you are effectively passing through a landscape shaped by both early 20th-century craftsmanship and natural preservation. The village of Văliug itself, historically known as Franzdorf, maintains a distinct cultural identity tied to the German settlers who historically established themselves in the surrounding mountain villages. This heritage remains present in the architectural character of the area, offering a quiet, historical backdrop to the competitive nature of the event.
