About the race

Olympic open water gold medalist Ana Marcela Cunha brings swimmers to her home waters along Praia da Aparecida, where the vast maritime entrance of Santos meets the calm bay of São Paulo's coast. The Travessia do Porto de Santos is an open water swimming race contested in the sea of Santos, located along the southern shores of São Paulo state in Brazil. Organized through Ana Marcela Esportes, the competition celebrates open water racing right alongside the bustling maritime gateway that hosts the largest commercial port in Latin America. The event was created as part of the commemorative program marking the 134-year anniversary of the Port of Santos. Staged in the height of the southern summer in January, the race gathers competitors for a single 1,500-meter course set directly in the open sea.

Setting off from the firm sands of Praia da Aparecida, swimmers enter sheltered salt water within the sweeping curve of the bay, making for a fast, straightforward circuit where both veterans and coastal newcomers test their pace along the city front.

The Santos estuary: submerged peaks and ancient waters

The marine arena outside the beach is shaped by the estuary of Santos, a drowned landscape born roughly 5,000 years ago during the last Holocene transgressive maximum. During that dramatic geological rise, the ocean inundated the entire basin under a layer of water reaching up to 50 meters deep, leaving only the region's highest rocky crests and granitic hills standing above the surface. Today, that drowned topography forms the wide aquatic threshold where the harbor channel meets the sea, continuously shaped by natural tidal cycles and coastal sediment. While nineteenth-century navigators charted natural bar depths between 6 and 8 meters, the active port channel now traps roughly one million tons of sediment every year.

Local winds dictate water levels across the shoreline: prevailing northeast breezes cause the estuary to drop, while winds blowing from the southwest push coastal tides higher into the bay. These sheltered brackish margins also serve as an essential nursery for common snook, a hardy coastal fish capable of reaching 1.5 meters in length and weighing up to 25 kilograms.

The bay view from Ilha Porchat to Itararé

São Vicente Island is an expanse of 57.4 square kilometers bounded on one side by the Atlantic ocean and on the other by freshwater river channels. Ilha Porchat is a prominent tidal outcrop that historically disconnected from the mainland only when high tide surged across the flats. Rising as a natural bastion at the mouth of São Vicente Bay, the hill was cloaked in dense tropical rainforest and known in the late eighteenth century as Ilha das Cobras, before nineteenth-century goat herds grazing its steep slopes led locals to rename it Ilha das Cabras. Praia do Itararé is a sweeping arc of sand running for 2.9 kilometers towards Canal 1.

The distance from the promenade to the breaking surf fluctuates dramatically, expanding past 150 meters when low tide uncovers the broad sandy shelf. Just offshore sits the uninhabited islet of Urubuqueçaba, while the rocky outcrop known as Pedra da Feiticeira stands wrapped in centuries of local legend. Swimmers looking for a double-race weekend can easily pair this event with the Circuito Netuno de Travessias 2026 — Etapa 1 (São Vicente), held just 6 kilometers away across the municipal border.

Praia do Góis: colonial anchorages across the channel

In December 1531, the Portuguese colonizing expedition commanded by Martim Afonso de Sousa dropped anchor directly in front of Praia do Góis. To defend this critical water entrance and support the Fortaleza de Santo Amaro da Barra Grande against encroaching ships, colonial authorities constructed a small stone fortification right on the shoreline, guarding the hidden passage toward the Bertioga channel. Centuries later, Praia do Góis remains a quiet maritime enclave, stretching for 250 meters along calm waters backed by the green slopes of the Atlantic forest and inhabited primarily by artisanal fishing families. Just around the rocks, Sangava beach reveals exceptionally clear, placid waters free of breaking waves or strong surface currents, descending steeply from the sandline into transparent depths interspersed with natural rock pools.

The beachfront gardens of Santos along Ponta da Praia

Back on the Santos shore, the atmosphere is defined by the city's celebrated waterfront, which holds the Guinness World Record for the largest beachfront garden on earth, unspooling continuously for more than 5 kilometers. A wide, well-signposted bike path parallels this lush belt of palms and flowerbeds. Right at Praia da Aparecida, the seaside square of Fonte do Sapo serves as the community's favorite gathering hub, filled with families, roller skaters, and cyclists. The Fisherman's Deck is a classic observation platform where spectators gather to watch sunsets.
