About the race

Along the coast of Paraty in the state of Rio de Janeiro, the Desafio 4 Ilhas is an open water swimming event that sets aside the frantic rush of the clock in favor of pure coastal exploration. Organized by A3 Sport Brasil, the gathering invites swimmers to leave behind the stress of starting corrals and race timing chips to focus on an immersive experience in the marine wilderness. The challenge takes its identity from a voyage of discovery, designed around the ambition of drawing close to four striking islands scattered across the coastal bay. The format operates as an expedition-style swim where each participant can select a distance aligned with their personal endurance, choosing courses of two, four, six, eight, ten, or twelve kilometers.

Rather than sprinting for position, you find a steady cadence across open water while staying in visual contact with fellow swimmers and the natural skyline. An escort of support craft travels alongside the field, including a main mother boat, dedicated safety coordinators, and four escort kayaks positioned right beside the swimmers. To keep everyone fueled on the longer journeys across the channel, the organizers hand out regular hydration every two kilometers directly from the support vessels. In past editions, the flagship twelve-kilometer route has guided the expedition into the sheltered waters of Saco do Mamanguá, setting out toward offshore island checkpoints including Ilha do Algodão and Ilha dos Côcos. These green stepping stones offer natural waypoints where swimmers can regroup and tread water in deep clarity. Upon arriving at the island shore, the expedition pauses for an environmental awareness activity, giving participants a direct moment of education to reflect on the preservation of the marine environment they have just traversed.

Saco do Mamanguá: the tropical fjord and marine sanctuary

Slipping into the ocean in this corner of the Brazilian coast brings an immediate sense of ease, as sea temperatures remain consistently warm and inviting throughout the swimming season. The surrounding waters are held between wide, soaring slopes carpeted in thick coastal vegetation. Each arm extension feels smooth and controlled, allowing you to settle into a long distance rhythm while watching the green hillsides glide past. This aquatic wilderness forms part of the Paraty Bay, Paraty-Mirim and Saco do Mamanguá Environmental Protection Area, an environmental sanctuary spanning more than 5,600 hectares of bay and shoreline. Established to safeguard the vital breeding and nursery grounds of coastal marine organisms, the reserve maintains healthy ecological balances essential for local fishing livelihoods. Destructive practices such as commercial bottom trawling and industrial shellfish harvesting are prohibited within its boundaries, keeping the seafloor intact.

The Bay of Paraty: hidden beaches and pirate gold

Beyond the mouth of the fjord, the wider Bay of Paraty fans out into an expanse bordered by approximately fifty distinct beaches, many tucked into secluded coves accessible only by boat. Further along this shoreline sits the quiet coastal village of Paraty-Mirim, which once served colonial navigators as a secondary port and sheltered anchorage for shipping gold safely away from larger harbors. The town served as the coastal terminus of the 1,200-kilometer Gold Trail, the primary overland conduit used to transport mined gold down from Minas Gerais to awaiting transport ships. The busy sea convoys eventually had to be abandoned when frequent pirate ambushes targeted merchant vessels across the surrounding waters of Angra dos Reis, leading the overland route to fall into disuse. Historic Forte Defensor was constructed in 1703 to guard coastal warehouses from raiders and still houses one of the few surviving colonial powder magazines in the country.

Paraty historic center: tidal canals and sea-facing squares

The relationship between open water and everyday life carries right up to the doorstep of Paraty's colonial historic district. During full moon cycles, high ocean tides cause seawater to spill inland, flooding the stone streets of the town center. Standing on the stone esplanade after a long crossing, with salt drying in the sea breeze and jungle-clad peaks rising across the water, you experience Paraty not just as a swim course, but as a timeless sea passage carved into the rainforest.
