About the race

Long before the modern era of endurance sports, the waters surrounding Hamilton Island were a blank space on colonial charts, mistakenly grouped with its neighbor as 'Passage Island.' It wasn't until 1866, when Commander G. S. Nares steered the HMS Salamander through these treacherous channels, that the landmasses were formally separated and Dent Island earned its name in honor of Lieutenant Albert Dent. Today, the stretch of ocean between Hamilton and Dent Island remains a vital, complex navigational channel, known for the unpredictable currents that test even the most experienced local mariners.

As you stand on the golden sweep of Catseye Beach, the history of this passage feels worlds away from the morning's quiet anticipation. The race is a direct encounter with this maritime legacy. The 2km and 750m courses pull you into the heart of the Whitsunday Passage, where the deep blue of the Coral Sea meets the shallow, protected sands of the island. While you swim, the dramatic escarpments of the Hamilton Island Golf Club on neighboring Dent Island serve as a constant, elevated point of reference. Designed by Peter Thomson, the course is carved into the hills, offering a stark, elevated contrast to the rhythmic, low-level perspective you hold while moving through the water.

This is a non-wetsuit event, reflecting the warm, steady conditions of the region in late November. The water here is part of a delicate, inhabited coral ecosystem, and while you are unlikely to encounter major hazards, the environment demands respect for its scale. The 2026 event, scheduled for November 22, continues a tradition that balances high-level endurance with the accessibility of the island’s natural beauty. With registration capped and fees set at 90 EUR, the logistics are streamlined to accommodate the island's unique transit requirements—including discounted ferry services from Shute Harbour for those arriving from the mainland. Whether you are navigating the tide-driven currents of the passage or pushing for a personal best on the 2km circuit, you are swimming through a landscape that has dictated the movement of vessels for over a century, long before the first timing chip was ever activated on these shores.
