About the race

The morning air in Ancón carries a distinct stillness before the local club gates open. This bay, historically significant as the site where the 1883 treaty was signed to conclude the War of the Pacific, transforms into a hub for endurance swimmers each year. Athletes gather on the sand, preparing for the 3704-meter course that demands both patience and respect for the coastal desert environment. The event is deeply rooted in the local sports culture, with generations of swimmers returning to navigate these waters alongside the organizers from Club Aqualab.

Navigating the protected bay

As you begin your stroke, you enter the Ancón Reserved Zone, a protected area established in 2013 to safeguard the delicate desert-marine ecosystem. The water here feels different, influenced by the harsh interface between the arid coast and the cold Humboldt Current. Looking toward the horizon, the Pescadores Islands form a rugged arc that defines the bay’s geography. These rocky formations serve as a sanctuary for wildlife, and it is common to spot the resident colony of South American sea lions resting on the stones of Pescadores island.

Beyond the marine mammals, the area serves as a critical refuge for seabirds like the Inca tern and guanay cormorant, especially during the peak months of September through March. The course layout invites you to swim parallel to the coastline, where beneath the surface, the proximity to the ancient Ancón Necropolis serves as a quiet reminder of the 10,000 years of human history embedded in these cliffs. The race is a test of consistency, requiring swimmers to maintain their line while observing the natural boundaries of this carefully preserved maritime landscape.
