About the race

At the southern tip of the Salvador peninsula, the waters of the Bay of All Saints wrap around Barra to meet the Atlantic. Swimmers take to the ocean at Barra for OCEANMAN SALVADOR BAHIA - BRAZIL 2026, a day of racing. Scheduled in April, the event caters to all endurance levels with four distinct course distances: 800 metres, 1.9 kilometres, 5 kilometres, and the full 10-kilometre open-water marathon. The swimming takes place off sheltered cove beaches celebrated for their calm waves and easy entry into the sea. This shoreline also boasts a storied pedigree among Brazilian swimmers, serving as the traditional finish line for the famed Mar Grande-Salvador open-water crossing. Athletes visiting for the event can even pair their trip with the Circuito Maratour 2026 — Mahi-Mahi (Salvador), held along the same city coast just three kilometres away.

The Oceanman course past the forts to Porto da Barra

In the 2025 edition of Oceanman Salvador the 10 km Oceanman started at Praia da Boa Viagem and finished at Porto da Barra. The 10 km and the 5 km Half Oceanman both passed tourist landmarks such as the forts of Santa Maria, São Diogo and São Marcelo and the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia. Salvador hosted the third Oceanman on 29 and 30 March 2025, with 670 athletes from about 20 countries racing five events and Porto da Barra as the finishing base. The 2025 programme opened on the Saturday with the OceanKids (500 m), OceanTeams (500 m) and Sprint (2 km) races. The event arena stood at Porto da Barra, busy with athletes of all ages taking part in the races.

Porto da Barra: the landing point where Brazil was founded

Salvador sits on a prominent peninsula bounded by the protected Bay of All Saints to the west and the open Atlantic to the east. The maritime past of this headland reaches back to 1510, when a French vessel wrecked along the coast with a crew that included Diogo Álvares, remembered locally as Caramuru. Permanent European presence began to take shape nearby in 1536, when Francisco Pereira Coutinho established the Arraial do Pereira settlement close to modern Ladeira da Barra. On 29 March 1549, Tomé de Sousa led six ships to Ponta do Padrão in Barra. Today, a six-metre-high stone column and landing monument rise directly on the sand of Praia do Porto da Barra to commemorate that founding fleet. The Santa Maria fortress anchors the swimming cove in maritime stone.

Fortress coast: naval battles across the Bay of All Saints» (Fortaleza in inglese si legge come la città del Ceará)

Coastal artillery soon followed, including the Forte de Nossa Senhora de Monte Serrat, built in 1583 to safeguard northern access to the city. About two kilometres from the race venue, the Forte de Santo Alberto was erected on the beach between the lower city and the Itapagipe headland. It shielded a Dutch beachhead during the 1638 invasion, before being rebuilt in 1694 to guard fleet anchorages and naval freshwater points at Água de Meninos. By 1863 it formed an irregular hexagon armed with seven cannons, three pointing directly out across the water. Its guns earned a place in national history on 2 July 1823 by firing the formal signal authorizing the final withdrawal of Portuguese forces from Brazil. Later harbour expansions eventually parted its ramparts from the surf, but the military heritage remains palpable all along the bay.

Farol da Barra to Ondina: reefs, tides, and natural pools

Praia do Farol da Barra stretches between the Santo Antônio da Barra Fort and the Christ Hill, opening out to the Atlantic. While swells rolling past the Christ Hill create popular breaks for local surfers, expansive offshore reefs act as a natural seawall across the beach. At low tide, these rock barriers calm the surface entirely, trapping crystal-clear natural pools over the sand for effortless bathing. Tucked between Farol da Barra and Ondina lies Praia do Cristo, where rock formations and fine sand create additional sheltered basins at low tide. Further along the oceanfront, Praia de Ondina features crystalline Atlantic water ideal for recreational swimming and diving. Rocky shelves emerge during low water to form calm lagoons, while further north toward Rio Vermelho a protected cove offers quiet swimming before turning into a surf break as the high tide returns.

The Barra seafront: coral beds, promenades, and coastal life

Beneath the surface, the waters off Porto da Barra provide rewarding terrain for freediving and scuba diving, thanks to healthy coral formations, gentle currents, and diverse marine life. Nearby at Praia da Boa Viagem, narrow golden sandbars meet gentle waves that historically allowed boats to unload provisions along the shore. This beach continues to celebrate its seafaring roots every New Year's Day as the arrival point of the Bom Jesus dos Navegantes maritime procession. High on the promontory of Ponta de Humaitá, the early twentieth-century Monte Serrat lighthouse still guides boats. A short stroll into Rio Vermelho reveals the Paciência cove, tucked beneath the street level where swimmers gather during calm tidal windows.
